US508--One and the Same by Eliasome US508--One and the Same by Eliasome

This photo is one of a series that I took during an expedition to a large chain of volcanic islands that separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Please see the corresponding Gallery for detailed information on the archipelago and to see the other photos from the series.

It must have been magnificent to stand there seeing the power of nature. Impressive - I hope to be able to be there some time in the future. :)

That experience was certainly the highlight of my life so far!  It was a three-month scientific expedition and we visited all of the major islands in the chain via a Russian research vessel.  The most magnificent aspect of it all was that the islands are uninhabited (except for a few desolate Russian military stations), and so the raw beauty of the nature was even more spectacular because it was untouched by human development!  My only regret is that I could not take a better camera with me; we made wet landings each day and our backpacks were heavy, and so I decided to take my most durable field camera (Nikon CP 995) which took OK pictures but nothing compared to a good DSLR.  I have updated the Gallery description with quite a bit more info in case you're interested in learning more about the islands and the story behind the series of photos I have been submitting.

Thanks for your comment -- much appreciated! :) (Smile)

You're very welcome! :) Thanks for letting me know the story behind this photo; I also read your gallery description. The islands look majestic but they also have a somewhat eerie impression on me. It is a bit like you are the last human on earth watching its doom, isn't it?
